DRDO Career from May 1984 to May 2012:
2004 - 2012 served as Scientist F at Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad. RCI is the brain child of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and primarily involved in the development of Aerospace systems. At Research Centre Imarat Dr Varaprasad is involved in the development of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) for aerospace applicstions as the Head, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Lab. : It is responsible for fabrication of high technology communication systems for aerospace applications. During my services at RCI lead and / or Associated with numerous technology projects that included : MEMS devices for telemetry, tele-command applications, Fibre Optic Gyros for Navigation, MEMS based pressure sensors & vibration sensors.
Management related (3 years from 2005 to 2007):
Head, Human Resources Development (HRD)
Conducted 'Aerospace Technology Orientation courses' for newly recruited Scientists of Research Centre Imarat. Initiated & Established e-learning centre. Young scientists with exceptional emotional intellegence were selected & motivated to work on challenging tasks such as Interceptor Missile Technologies.
Subjects taught in the orientation courses include Telemetry, Tele-command applications, Fibre Optic Gyros for Navigation, MEMS based Pressure sensors & Vibration sensors, Actuator & control ystems, Proximity fuses, Minaturized Power supply systems for aerospace applications, active RADAR seeker for AAD missile, Imaging Infra Red / IIR seeker for NAG missile.
1984 - 1988 :
Worked on the following projects at Naval Materials Research Laboratory, Bombay.Development of Lead Zirconate Titanate materials for SONAR Transducer system. Strontium doped Lead Zirconate Titanate materials with piezoelectric stress coefficients exceeding 250 pC/N have been made in desired sizes and shapes for the first Indian SONAR. Development of PZT-Polymer composites for Hydrophone applications. (Related publication) A.M.Varaprasad and R. Krishnan, PZT-Polymer composites for hydrophone transducer applications, International Journal of Sensors and Actuators, Vol14, pp361-368 (1988). Piezoelectric composites with 3-3 connectivity have been made using BURPS process. Hydrophones were fabricated and are used to make towed arrays. Development of anti radar paints (Notable article : Indian Express, Invisible plane, 22 Sept, 1987) . Anti radar paints with ferrite additives were made and coatings applied on aircraft wings and edges to reduce the radar cross section.
1986-87 :Japan Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship Period : Associated with Professor Kenji Uchino at Physics Department, Sophia University, Tokyo on the Development of Accoustic Emission Sensors.
1988 - 2003 :
Worked on the following projects at Defence Materials & Stores Research & Development Establishment, Kanpur .Development of composite Piston Insulators for Mirage-2000 brake assemblies. Development of Y-ZrO2 Thermal Barrier Coatings for Mirage-2000 aircraft engines Development of CAF / Central Analytical Facilities: Sophisticated equipment include Scanning Electron Microscope, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, X-Ray powder diffraction, Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer, Differential Thermal Analysis, NMR.
About 50 publications in National, International Journals and several presentations in conferences & workshops.
